What Is Kyokushin Karate? A Guide to the World's Strongest Karate Style
Kyokushin Karate is a powerful style of martial art founded by the legendary karate master Masutatsu (Mas) Oyama. The word Kyokushin translates to "the ultimate truth" — a name that reflects the style's commitment to honest, rigorous training that tests both body and spirit.
Since its founding in 1964, Kyokushin has grown into one of the largest and most respected karate organisations in the world, with millions of practitioners training across more than 120 countries.
A Practical, Complete Martial Art
Kyokushin combines both traditional and freestyle training methods into a practical and effective self-defence system suitable for men, women and children of all ages. A typical class may include kata (formal patterns), kihon (basic techniques), conditioning, and kumite (sparring) — giving students a well-rounded foundation in both the art and application of karate.
Whether you are a child building confidence and coordination for the first time or an adult looking for a physically demanding and mentally rewarding discipline, Kyokushin offers a path for every level.
How Kyokushin Differs From Other Karate Styles
Karate is both an art and a philosophy. Because each practitioner brings a different personality and perspective, karate masters throughout history have founded their own schools, teaching their own style or "ryu." This is why so many styles exist today — Shotokan, Goju-Ryu, Shito-Ryu and many others — each with its own emphasis and approach.
The biggest difference with Kyokushin is that it is a full-contact style of karate. While many styles use point-based or light-contact sparring, Kyokushin practitioners train and compete with full-power techniques. This approach develops real-world toughness, genuine self-defence capability, and a deep understanding of what techniques actually work under pressure.
This does not mean training is reckless or unsafe. Classes are carefully structured, and students progress at their own pace under experienced instruction. But it does mean that Kyokushin students develop a level of physical resilience, mental fortitude and honest self-awareness that is hard to find elsewhere.
Traditional Values, Modern Growth
Kyokushin remains deeply traditional in its training methods, protocol and beliefs. Students learn the etiquette of the dojo, the discipline of consistent practice, and the respect that comes from pushing through challenges alongside others. These are values that extend well beyond the training floor and into everyday life.
At the same time, Kyokushin avoids rigid guidelines that limit growth. Practitioners are encouraged to develop, adapt and progress — contributing to the ongoing evolution of the style while honouring the foundations laid by Sosai Mas Oyama.
It is this balance of tradition and openness that has kept Kyokushin relevant, respected and growing for over 60 years.
